Many people are comparing God Eater to Monster Hunter. That’s natural, because there is no other game really like Monster Hunter on the PSP. I’m currently mid-way through the game, I doubt I’ll ever complete Rank 4 without upgrading my equipment, or finding a partner.*sigh*

The game is mission based, you look go to the desk, and you select a mission, and partners, and you go to the gate where you head out to fight Aragami. I hear it sports about a hundred missions, with download content, you’re definitely not going to complete the entire in two days, of which, that I’m sure.

There are 4 tiers of different levels, Rank 1-3 is (Lower rank), Rank 4-6 (Upper rank), Rank 7-10 (Missions after clearing the game), Download Missions, there are different equipment/drops at each of the first 3 tiers. Of which certain missions are STORY mode, which you have to complete to progress, and FREE mode which are optional.

OST

I can’t even start to describing how nice the OST blends in with the game. I loved it.

Character Customisation

Very much like monster hunter, you get to choose your appearance, name, not too many options I would say.

Scenarios/Areas

There are 6 different areas in the game. One major difference is that maps are loaded before the stage starts, which means, there’s no more zones or zoning in and out of areas. The Aragamis can follow you through out the map, there are also shortcuts on the map which only Aragamis have access to.

Equipment

A general equipment list looks like this when on a mission, 1 x sword, 1 x gun, 1 x shield, 2 x skill upgrades, 1 x upper body clothing and 1 x lower body clothing. You will be able to combine or upgrade more and more equipment as you progress through the different Ranks of the game.

Currently the sword view is selected

Items

There is a limit to the number of items you can bring per mission, depending on how many npcs there are in your party at the same time. You cannot combine items while in the mission itself. Throughout the mission, there are shiny spots, at which if you inspect them with the O button, you will collect the item, at the end of the mission, these shinies will be automatically traded for items which will be added to your inventory.

Yorozuya Shop

You can buy potions and equipment with the beggar looking guy. More items will be available as you progress through the levels.

Terminal

From here you can access, items on hand, inventory, switch/upgrade/create new equipment, save, exit game, encyclopedia, etc, from this screen you will also be able to combine bullets and test them out.

Here you can mix and match bullets

Testing area to try out your bullets before paying for it

Gameplay

As per the screen, you can see three gauges on the top left, your life bar, OP bar, and stamina bar. There’s actually only two modes you can be in, blade mode or gun mode.

Movement in both modes:

  • Tap R – Switches between Blade/Gun mode
  • Holding R – Enables running around, deletes Stamina
  • Tap L – Aligns camera to your character’s view
  • Holding L – Lock on target
  • Tap X – Jump
  • Tap O – Glide, it’s also possible to do either a front, back, left or right hop.
  • Start – Brings out the map
  • Select – Brings out the item screen, press Square to consume.

Blade Mode:

  • Tap Square – Blade slash (Light)
  • Tap Triangle – Blade slash (Heavy)
  • Hold Triangle – Charges your blade, you can harvest/consume Aragami shots, or items from dead Aragamis. It’s called predator mode, but it’s not really much of a mode in itself. According to websites, Aragami mode will last for about 30 seconds, during which you can double jump, and your damage significantly increases. When you charge it your blade’s Aragami will manifest and looks like it’s going to bite off a piece of whatever you’re fighting.
  • Hold Square – Charged slash (Very cool, not too sure what defines a chargeable blade)
  • Hold R + Triangle – Blocks with blade, will deplete Stamina and take damage still.

While charging in blade mode, your Aragami sword is released

When it is fully charged, release the button and your Aragami and it will “bite”

Notice the right where it says 1. You have assimilated a single shot from the Aragami you are fighting.

Gun Mode:

  • Tap Square – Fires bullet type 1
  • Tap Triangle – Fires bullet type 2
  • Holding either buttons will open up a bullet selection menu. Bullets deplete OP, which can be gained back either via items, or by damaging Aragamis while in sword mode.
  • R + Triangle – Transfers a consumed Aragami shot to an ally, or Fires a consumed Aragami shot, depending on what type of consumed bullet is selected.
  • R + Square – Fires a special bullet (I was told this is randomly gained when Alisa is hit, not too sure.)
  • Tap L  – Shows cross hair

All in all, God Eater is a pretty fantastic game, changes are, if you like Monster Hunter, you’ll like God Eater too! You don’t really need to understand japanese to play this game, unless you’re in for the story, of which, I think you should just play FF6/7 or MGS, cos nothing else really beats their stories.

This is how the cover looks like if you’re hunting for it in the store, and if it’s not available in your local store, I would highly recommend the following online stores:

play-asia.com

Well then, if you’ve decided to purchase this game, you’re in luck, because I’m playing the game, I’m been going around and collecting information to help you. Do look around, and you might find what you’re looking for!

The story mode ends at level 6.

There’s still a 7 8 9. I believe at this point you’re supposed to give the professor some items. He’ll tell you what he requires when you speak to him.
